Course Introduction
Beyond robust communication among team members, communicating and reporting on climate change is vital to take action to confront the climate crisis. It is a tool for educating and mobilizing audiences by raising their voice, sharing solutions, and advocating for change shaped by different experiences, cultural contexts, and underlying values for climate change transformation. Misinformation and disinformation are widespread on the issue of climate change, and they are major obstacles towards progress in tackling the climate crisis. Deceptive or misleading content distorts the perception of climate science and solutions, creates confusion, and often leads to delays in action or even harmful action. The ability of different stakeholders in communicating and reporting climate change to competently use communication skills that are applicable to them based on their level of education, gender, ethnicity among others, however determines the extent to which climate mitigation and adaptation efforts will translate to achieve sustainable development goals.
Hence, the stakeholders should be adequately empowered to communicate and report effectively for the overall achievement of net zero emissions, focusing on the opportunities and engaging affected people. Based on the aforementioned, this capacity building programme will equip relevant stakeholders with requisite skills to shift from the “traditional” dissemination and publicity strategy which utilizes campaigns, workshops or seminars to one which adopts a mix of communication tools, channels and approaches to facilitate engagement with communities in communicating and reporting climate change.
