Course Introduction

The agricultural and natural resource sector contributes some percentage to any country’s Gross National Product as majority of the populace in tropical countries are employed in this sector. The dominant role of agriculture makes it obvious that even minor climate deteriorations can cause devastating socioeconomic consequences.

Climate change is an unprecedented threat to food security and is clearly evident in Nigeria as arid and semi-arid areas in the northern region are becoming drier, while the southern parts are getting wetter. One of the biggest threats is growing climate unpredictability, which makes subsistence farming difficult. Climate change often appears very obscure but in Nigeria, it is real, as incidences of disease and deaths, post-harvest losses, reduced agricultural productivity and a rising number of heat waves have been recorded.

Adaptation is the principal way to deal with the impacts of changing climate. It involves taking practical actions to manage risks from climate impacts, protect communities and strengthen the resilience of the economy. In light of the need to adopt Climate Smart Approaches as the panacea to climate change while ensuring sustainable agricultural productivity and natural resource management, this training workshop is designed to provide participants with innovative methods of agriculture that sustainably increases productivity, resilience (adaptation), reduces/removes greenhouse gases (mitigation) while enhancing the achievement of national food security and natural resource management development goals.
